Bottle and Can Drive

Saturday, July 13
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Today’s the day to get rid of all those empties from your early summer celebrations! Bring your beverage bottles and cans to Maxwell’s parking lot on Saturday, July 13, from 10 AM to 3 PM. The Bottle and Can Retrieval Center will have a big trailer parked at the library, ready to haul them away for recycling. The proceeds will support Maxwell Memorial Library.

Can’t make it today? The Library has an account set up at the Fairmount bottle return center, so you can drop your empties off year-round and have them earmarked for Maxwell.

Thank you for your support!

Village Mile-Long Sale (and More)

Saturday, May 18
8:00 AM to 3:00 PM

The village will hold its Mile-Long Sale today.

Maxwell will be open our regular Saturday hours — 10 AM to 3 PM — but the village-wide event begins at 8.

We are holding several events that day:

Book Sale

Stop in at the Library for our special book sale with great selections for readers of all ages.

Cash or check only, please.

Cruisin’ Cones

The Cruisin’ Cones Ice Cream truck will also be at Maxwell to tempt you with their delicious frozen treats! They’ve generously offered to donate a portion of the day’s proceeds with the library, so please come support both this fine local business and your library.

Maxwell’s Book Lover’s Basket Drawing

And the drawing for the winner of Maxwell’s Book Lover’s Basket will be at close of business today, with the lucky person being contacted on May 20! More details on the contents of the basket here. If you love books (and of course you do!) you won’t want to miss this chance to win a large Barnes and Noble gift certificate plus many fun reading-related goodies.

Maxwell Library Is [no longer] Accepting Book Donations!

Our book sale is over, so we aren’t accepting donations now. We’ll post an update when we’re ready for donations again.

Thanks to all who contributed!

We are once again accepting new and gently-used books, DVDs, CDs, and other library-type materials!

Drop your items at the front desk today. Questions about our Donation Policy? Give us a call or check out our Website for more information.

1 box per person per visit!

Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Maxwell Library is excited to be a drop-off location for donations of children’s bedding to Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

This group of volunteers is dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering beds to children ages 3 to 17 in need in the greater Syracuse area. Their motto is No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town!®.

How can you help? You can donate:

  • New twin-size sheets
  • Comforters
  • Bed-in-a-bag
  • Throw blankets
  • Standard pillows
  • Pillowcases
  • Twin mattress protectors

These items must be brand new and in their store packaging. We have a donation bin inside the library—look for the little bed near the front door!

For more information on other ways to help or to become a volunteer, contact the Syracuse chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace on their Website.

Book Donations

Don’t Panic!

We’re not banning books, but our limited space means that we’re unable to take donations of books and similar material at the moment.

We are grateful for our patrons’ generosity and will let you know when we are able to accept donations again.

Holds that would’ve gone unclaimed on Saturday will be held until Monday. A reminder that we are fine free and no longer charge overdue fees! Books and other basic library media can also be returned at other libraries within the OCPL system. 📚

Thank you for your cooperation!

Group/Class Visit Requests

Maxwell Memorial Library is a fun, free, and educational place to visit. Our library welcomes families, school classes, daycares, clubs, and other groups to schedule a time for a staff member to present a tour of the library’s resources and services for children and adults. Visits may also include a special program designed for your group such as a special story time, book talks, library skills (how to search the online library catalog, online database review, etc.), assistance with technology, and special assistance with using the library in a desired area of study.

How to Schedule a Group Visit

  • Email us at maxwell@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org
  • When emailing, please provide several dates and times that work best. We will do our best to accommodate one of your requested dates.

Your request must be submitted at least two weeks prior to your desired visit date. Groups can schedule a visit Monday–Thursday between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Please be aware that your visit may have to be rescheduled if the librarian in charge of the visit calls out sick or if the library closes due to inclement weather or any other unforeseen reason.

If your group members need library cards and you want them to be able to use them at the time of the visit, please submit library card applications prior to your desired visit date. Please Note: Children between the ages of 5 and 14 will need a parent/guardian present in order to obtain a library card. Children 14 and older can obtain their own library card if they have a photo ID and proof of their current address.

Holiday Photo Shoot

Saturday, November 6
Maxwell Community Room
Registration required

We’re excited to offer our patrons an opportunity to have a keepsake photo taken by Maxwell’s own Michelle C.—a photojournalist by training—just in time for the holidays!

We have 12 sessions available for small groups of 1 to 8 people (sorry, no pets 🙁). Each session is listed as a separate event on our calendar for November 6. We’re allowing 15 minutes for each session since Michelle will need 5 minutes to get ready for the next group.

Michelle will take several shots for each group and will email you the best images (up to 3 shots). You’ll be able to use the photos however you like including printing, sharing, and holiday greetings and gifts. The photographer and Maxwell Library will not retain any usage or ownership rights to the photos. They belong to you.

The photo shoot and the finished photos are free, but registration is required as space is limited, so register for your slot as soon as possible. Only one time slot per group is allowed. Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes ahead of time, ready for your session.

Note that facial masks are required in the library for everyone over the age of 2—regardless of vaccination status—except for during the actual photo shoot.

Library Catalog Down Temporarily

Update: Polaris seems to be back up, along with apps like Libby and Hoopla that depend on it.

Today (May 10) you might have run into problems with looking books up or placing holds in our catalog. It turns out that Polaris (the Onondaga County Public Library System’s catalog) is down due to some networking problems that the County’s computers are having.

This means that browsing the catalog, placing holds, and seeing what items you have out are imossible at the moment. Some less obvious issues are that checking out material using Libby/Overdrive or Hoopla is also not working.

We don’t know when everything will be back up, but the IT people downtown are working on the issue and seem to be making some progress.

From the Archives…

In getting ready for appointment-free browsing starting May 3, Rena & Alyssa have been moving some things out of public spaces that had become de facto storage during the past year. In the course of doing that, this blast from the past turned up:

Statistics for February 1922 showing total circulation for the month of 4 juvenile non-fiction, 39 adult fiction, and 20 juvenile fiction items. Cursive comment reads 'Closed because of scarlet fever'.
Maxwell’s Record of Books Borrowed for February 1922

We are in the process of going through our old records and found this! 99 years ago, February 1922, we were closed due to scarlet fever. While it was only for a month, Covid was not the first time we were closed for health concerns.
