Wondering What to Do With Your Eclipse Glasses?

You can bring them back to Maxwell!

On October 2, 2024 there’s going to be an annular eclipse in South America’s Southern Cone (mostly in Chile and Argentina). Astronauts Without Borders and Eclipse Glasses USA are collecting eclipse glasses that are still usable to distribute in schools in the path of that eclipse.

Maxwell and other OCPL libraries will collect glasses, and OCPL will forward them on to one of the organizations that will distribute them in South American schools.

To be usable glasses must have no scratches, punctures, tears or any other damage that might compromise their protective quality.

In an annular eclipse the entire moon fits over the sun but the outer edge of the sun is still visible as a ring or annulus.

We’re out of Eclipse Glasses :-(

We have run out of glasses for viewing the eclipse.

We Have Eclipse Glasses

Several patrons have asked for details about the glasses… specs on the specs, as it were.

They are provided by Star Net with the support of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL), and the Space Science Institute.

The following is from the “fine print” on the glasses themselves. In particular, note the limit of 3 minutes continuous use.

Eclipse Cereal Box Viewer

Saturday, April 6
11:00 AM to 12 Noon

For all ages
Free
Registration required

Looking directly at the sun is extremely dangerous; irreversible eye damage occurs. While it’s very tempting to look directly at the Sun during the eclipse, this is not safe.

At this program, we’ll use a cereal box and other common materials to create a safe way to view the Sun during the eclipse.

Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Each participant will receive a bag of s’mores ingredients to cook at a later (warmer and sunnier) date. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Many thanks to Cam’s Pizzeria in Camillus for donating the pizza boxes!

Food Drive for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry

Join us in helping our neighbors in need!

The Food Pantry at St. Joseph’s Church in Camillus serves families in zip codes 13031, 13112, and 13164. These are our neighbors, and they need our help.

Maxwell Memorial Library in Camillus is now a drop-off location for donations to keep the Food Pantry’s shelves stocked.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain all foods needed from the Food Bank of CNY to supply the families who rely on our local pantry. You can help by donating some of the most needed foods and other items so no one has to go without.

Maxwell will collect non-perishable items and bring them to St. Joseph’s. A list of suggested donations is available at the library, and it can also be downloaded to your smartphone here.

Here is some general information to help with your shopping and giving:

  • Please do not leave items outside the library. You must bring them inside during our regular hours.
  • Check for expiration dates. The pantry cannot distribute anything post-expiration.
  • Packages must be unopened.
  • Giant jars of peanut butter may sound like a good idea, but please donate regular size items, not super-sized.
  • We can only accept non-perishable items, so no fresh produce, dairy, meat, or anything requiring refrigeration or freezing.
  • If you choose to donate a gift card or a monetary gift, please do not put it in our collection bin. Please give it to one of the library staff so we can keep it safe for St. Joseph’s.

Please be generous. Thank you for caring and for your support of our neighbors!

Alert about an error in the paper instructions for IRS Form 1040/1040-SR

Tax forms and instructions

The IRS has alerted us that there was an error in the printed instructions for form 1040/1040-SR. The error concerns which line numbers to copy from in using IRA Deduction Worksheet-Schedule 1, Line 19 (page 92 in the printed, January 6, 2021 version of the instruction book).

The current electronic version of the instruction book (February 9, 2021) has corrected the error, and Maxwell has paper copies of IRS Notice 1451 giving the correct instructions for those working from the paper instructions.
